EXCLUSIVE: FM facing renewed calls to join international Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance as Labour MSP Monica Lennon warns against climate 'backsliding'.

Humza Yousaf is under pressure to finally sign Scotland up to an international coalition to axe fossil fuels - nearly two years on from a pledge by Nicola Sturgeon. At COP26, Sturgeon said it was “highly likely” the country would join the Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance, which includes Wales along with other nations like Denmark, France and Costa Rica.

But he’s also stressed plans under Sturgeon to oppose all new North Sea drilling remain part of a “draft” energy strategy and are not yet official policy. And Yousaf and other ministers have refused to say if the controversial proposed Rosebank oil field off the coast of Shetland should go ahead. Sturgeon previously opposed the since-paused Cambo development in the North Sea.

Lennon told the Record: “When the world was watching during COP26 the Scottish Government signalled it would join Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance. So it is disappointing that almost two years down the line there has been zero action from SNP and Scottish Green ministers. The Central Scotland MSP added: “While the climate and nature emergencies have intensified, the SNP appears to be backsliding on its climate commitments, with Humza Yousaf and his top team refusing to strongly oppose the Tory UK government allowing the planet-wrecking Rosebank oil field to go ahead. Like the Labour government in Wales, the Scottish Government must join this vital alliance.
