Hundreds of people have died after a powerful earthquake strike in Morocco, close to the world-famous tourist hub of Marrakesh in the country’s west.
Reuters reported the epicentre was at a relatively shallow depth of 18.5 km and occurred about 72 km southwest of Marrakesh and 56 km west of the town of Oukaimeden.
A majority of the casualties and damage is understood to have ensued in provincial localities around the epicentre. Families have continued staying out on the streets, fearing aftershocks could result in further collapses of concrete structures that remain upright. "I stopped and realised what a disaster it was. It was very serious, as if a river had burst its banks. The screaming and crying was unbearable," he said."People are in the squares, in the cafes, preferring to sleep outside. Pieces of facades have fallen."
