New store, Gong cha, attracted big crowds during its opening this weekend, with people queuing out the door. The café is located on Merrion Street, attached to the Merrion Centre and sells the ever popular bubble tea.
Bubble tea, otherwise known as boba tea or tapioca milk tea is a Chinese drink that originated in Taiwan in the 1980s. It comes in a variety of different flavours, accompanied by chewy tapioca balls alongside a range of toppings.There are a number of cafes across the city, with Gong cha being the latest arrival. The Leeds store posted on the Gong cha Instagram account showing a photo of the storefront . It has a cream surrounding with white and red font and the Chinese translation alongside.
The caption on the post read: "Who’s joining us for day two of our Leeds grand opening, Don’t forget you can enjoy a special 2-for-1 offer on our favourite drinks too." Photos from Sunday showed people queuing past the Works in the Merrion eagerly awaiting entry. The brand has venues in Manchester, London, Newcastle, Liverpool and now Leeds.
