Heritage Open Days will see thousands of historic venues open to the public for free
Heritage Open Days are England's largest community-led festival of history and culture, involving thousands of local volunteers and organisations. Founded in 1994 the open days aim to bring people together to celebrate heritage, community, and history.
Running from September 8 to September 17, more than 5,000 events and buildings will be open to the public for free. In Merseyside alone, there are more than 150 building opening their doors for free - and below we have listed five you do not want to miss.Birkenhead Priory and St Mary's Tower The oldest standing building on Merseyside, the Priory offers a unique insight into Birkenhead. The first ferry across the Mersey operated here from 1150 to 1536. St Mary’s Tower offers spectacular views across to Liverpool, along the river, of Cammell Laird’s shipyards and also the surrounding area.Address: Birkenhead Priory, Priory Street, Birkenhead, CH41 5JHDeep below Liverpool's streets are the historic subterranean tunnels and chambers, built by Georgian philanthropist and merchant Joseph Williamson. Explore the deep tunnels built beneath his house on Mason Street which was quarried for the local sandstone in the 1800s.Address: Mason Street, Edge Hill, Liverpool, L7 3EWExplore behind the Art Deco exterior of the George's Dock building, which will be opening its doors. At the time of its construction, the Queensway Mersey Tunnel was the largest underwater road in the world and the biggest municipal undertaking. George's Dock Building is one of six ventilation stations for the tunnel and is also the most ornate as it was built to be the Head Office for the Mersey Tunnels.Address: George's Dock Way, Liverpool, L3 1DDThe Great Hall opened in 1854 and was originally intended to be Liverpool’s first concert hall, hosting classical music concerts. Over time the use of the hall has greatly expanded. Inside is a beautifully designed barrel-vaulted ceiling, two magnificent stained glass windows at either end, and the Organ made by Henry Willis with 7,737 pipes making it the third largest pipe organ in the United Kingdom.The Old Dock Tour An opportunity to explore The Old Dock at Liverpool ONE, in partnership with National Museums Liverpool as part of Open Heritage Days. The Old Dock is the world's first commercial enclosed wet dock, a historic location revealed in 2001 during the excavations to create Liverpool ONE.
