Scientists are proposing this “inland archipelago” of 30 isolated mountains is a new “ecoregion” that is home to hundreds of plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth.Located in southeastern portion of Africa in the nations of Malawi and Mozambique, there lies a chain of mountains, or granitic inselbergs, that tower above the surrounding landscape.
Accordingly, around 100 specialists from many different disciplines conducted more than 30 biological surveys to investigate and document this region overthe past two decades. “There is so much more to discover, but many of these species may go extinct before we can record them,” Dr Farooq said unhappily.
“The whole of Thyolo mountain, the whole of the forest reserve has been completely clear-felled,” Professor Bayliss said sadly. “There’s nothing left.”
