Russia's defence ministry confirmed the attack in Makiivka but said 63 of its recruits had been killed

at around midnight, as people in the region would have been celebrating the start of the New Year.

“There were dead and wounded, the exact number is still unknown. The building itself was badly damaged,” he wrote on Telegram. Igor Girkin, a retired Russian Federal Security Service officer who helped Moscow annex Crimea in 2014,Mr Girkin, who has criticised Russia’s military failures in Ukraine, said ammunition had been stored in the same building where the recruits had been accommodated.

“Almost all of the military equipment was also destroyed, which stood right next to the building without any disguise whatsoever,” he wrote. “This is not the only such deployment of personnel and equipment in the destruction zone [range] of Himars missiles. And – yes – this is not the first such case.”
