Prison authorities have warned Scotland's jails are dangerously overcrowded despite repeated government pledges to lock-up fewer people.
Hundreds of Scots prisoners serving short sentences could be released in the New Year under SNP Government plans.
Under the plans – which SNP ministers are trying to speed through Holyrood – between 260 and 390 prisoners could be released by early February in three tranches over six weeks. The planned legislation would also make small changes to how ministers can alter the automatic early release points for prisoners.
