The US President's son is facing an unprecedented court case of his own, but experts believe this creates an awkward reality for Republicans
Mr Biden has pleaded ‘not guilty’ to three felony charges and his lawyer has argued that he did not see himself as an addict when he purchased the gun and did not intend to deceive anyone. Instead, it poses a dilemma for the Republican party, in part because Donald Trump’s supporters cannot easily challenge President Biden on the case without discussing the cases Trump is facing.it is “quite an awkward case for Republicans to make political capital out of”.
Mr Biden’s cooperation with the investigation means he is unlikely to be jailed. And if so, Mr Gawthorpe expects the trial will also fade from voters’ minds, in contrast to Trump’s ongoing legal battles.“I think if this trial comes and goes and Hunter Biden doesn’t go to prison, whether he is guilty or not, I do not see it having a big impact.”
Trump also faces three other criminal prosecutions as well – although it is unlikely they will to go to trial before the election. But President Biden’s open approach to his son’s drug problems – which worsened after his other son, Beau, died in 2015 – should also mean that Mr Biden’s trial is unlikely to lose the sitting president support from those already planning to vote for him.that the president’s approach has been to “point to the many families in America who have tried to help family members overcome addiction”.
