With 130mph winds, such a strong storm has never been seen this early in hurricane season, with its impact expected to be catastrophic
Hurricane Beryl has developed into an “extremely dangerous” category 4 storm, becoming the earliest major hurricane of the Lesser Antilles on record for June, according to researchers.
“This is a very serious situation developing for the Windward Islands,” warned the National Hurricane Centre in Miami, adding that Beryl is “forecast to bring life-threatening winds and storm surge”. “Our visitors are here with us,” said Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley. “Some of them are not due to leave until Monday and Tuesday, and some of them have never gone through a hurricane or a storm before.” She called on residents to offer support to visitors, where possible.More than 400 people were being housed in hurricane shelters across the island, the nation’s Chief Shelter Warden, Ramona Archer-Bradshaw, told CBC News. “I am pleased that people are using the shelters,” she said.
The storm is expected to strengthen slightly as it tracks away from the Lesser Antilles later on Monday, before weakening into a category 2 hurricane and tracking north-west across the Caribbean Sea, before making a close approach to Jamaica on Wednesday 3 July.It took Beryl only 42 hours to strengthen from a tropical depression to major hurricane, a feat accomplished only six other times in Atlantic hurricane history, according to expert Sam Lillo.
