Pitcher said the hurricane was expected to sustain winds of up to 57 miles per hour along the western coast of the island, with some gusts measuring up to 74 miles per hour.
Lee is expected to decrease in strength as it travels north, and is expected to be downgraded to a tropical storm before it makes landfall in North America on Saturday. Tropical storm watches have also been declared for many of the islands off the coast of New England, including Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, and Block Island.
