Ann Heron was just 44 when she was brutally murdered.
A man accused of murdering his wife over three decades ago has pleaded with authorities to finally clear his name.
Her wealthy haulage contractor husband Peter was arrested for her murder in 2005 by Durham Constabulary but the charges were dropped three months later. The Heron family has been fiercely critical of the investigation by Durham police into Ann’s murder and their continued focus on Peter, who is now 88. He claims he’s had to endure more than three decades of suspicion.
“I’d also like to see an independent investigation carried out by another police force into Ann’s murder.” In April last year, the Independent Office for Police Conduct ordered Durham Constabulary to investigate Peter’s complaints about the way the case has been handled. Benson, who died in 2011, was believed to be the driver of the blue car seen driving away from the property. But following a lengthy investigation by Durham, including DNA testing, he was dismissed as a suspect.Sign up to our daily Glasgow Live newsletter here to receive news and features direct to your inbox.
