Gardening experts emphasize the importance of watering hydrangeas deeply before winter to ensure healthy growth and abundant blooms in the following spring.
Hydrangeas, known for their large and stunning blooms that last from late spring to autumn, are a favourite among gardeners. As colder weather is expected this weekend, gardening experts have highlighted an 'essential' task to ensure these shrubs 'bloom bigger next spring' with 'flowers that can last up to 20 growing seasons'. The key is watering hydrangeas before the winter season. Hydrangea.
com, a retailer of the plant, warns that the cold and dry weather can be tough on hydrangeas during winter. They said: 'Since hydrangeas are water-loving shrubs, it's essential to give them one last thorough and deep watering before the ground freezes. When hydrangeas receive a deep watering before winter, their roots can hold on to moisture that will carry them through spring.' Soto Gardens' experts agreed, stating that 'every hydrangea type loves water'. They advised: 'Make sure they are well hydrated throughout the year, including the autumn and winter. Big long drinks are best when watering hydrangeas.', reports the Express. Plant retailer Monrovia also stressed the importance of consistent and deep watering as hydrangeas are naturally thirsty plants. They pointed out: 'Cool, drying winter winds suck the moisture right out of the plants – and hydrangeas don't use lip balm. Doesn't have to be hot to be dry. 'In areas where a freeze is not an issue, water deeply but infrequently even throughout the winter. This depends on the amount of rainfall you receive.' To water hydrangeas at this time, make a small hole in the side of a five-gallon bucket and fill it with water. Then set at the base of the plant, allowing the water to trickle out slowly. Another method is to turn on your hose to a slow trickle and place it at the base of the plant for an hour or so
