A 'good man' who will 'put the country first'
Hyndburn and Haslingden MP Sara Britcliffe has hinted she believes Nadhim Zahawi would be a good choice as future leader of the Conservatives.
Ms Britcliffe, who became the youngest MP when she was elected in 2019, was interviewed on BBC News from the Central Lobby of the Houses of Parliament this afternoon . During the interview BBC presenter Ian Watson pointed out that she had remained 'very loyal' during Boris Johnson's partygate scandal which saw him being fined for breaking lockdown laws.
"I was very loyal to Boris but I think it got to the position where he couldn't govern anymore because there was so many resignations," Ms Britcliffe said. The Hyndburn MP resigned from her post as Parliamentary Private Secretary at the Department for Education yesterday and was one of more than 50 MPs who stood down from government roles in light of the Chris Pincher saga.
Ms Britcliffe was then asked about Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi, who she had worked closely with in his former role as Education Secretary, and whether or not she would support him should he choose to stand as leader of the Conservative Party. Mr Zahawi was among those who urged Boris Johnson to resign but did not step down from his position as Chancellor.
"It was a privilege to work with Nadhim Zahawi," the Hyndburn MP replied. "I think Nadhim Zahawi is a great man, he is somebody I have worked very closely with and is an all-round good guy. My decision hasn't been made but he is a good man and will put the interests of the country first.
