Sarah Smith says she is 'concerned about its far-reaching implications for our NHS, palliative care system and the courts'
Hyndburn MP Sarah Smith has outlined the number of reasons as to why she will be voting against assisted dying. MPs are due to debate the proposed Assisted Dying Bill and vote on the bill on November 29 - further debates and votes would be needed before the bill becomes law.
“It will not have as much time for debate and the committee is not guaranteed to represent a variety of views. Without the full weight of the government machine to develop this bill, I am also concerned about its far-reaching implications for our NHS, palliative care system and the courts.” “This includes a significant minority of people who had no likelihood of a foreseeable natural death, which is something I could never support. Most importantly, I believe that palliative care can provide people with dignity towards the end of life and allow them to pass away comfortably.
