Oats’ name began circulating as a potential target for Kentucky when the news broke that John Calipari would be leaving for Arkansas after 15 seasons with the Wildcats.

Despite any rumors to the contrary, rest assured that I will continue that pursuit as your head coach.”

Oats, who came to Alabama in 2019, is fresh off of leading the Crimson Tide men’s basketball team to its first-ever Final Four appearance. The Tide fell to No. 1 seed and eventual National Champion UConn Saturday, ending Alabama’s season at 25-12.After Sunday’s Final Four loss, Oats reiterated his desire to to continue to grow Alabama’s basketball program and build on recent success.

“They’ve really supported us since we’ve gotten here. They’ve gotten behind this when I took the job,” Oats said of the administrations support of him and the basketball program. “A lot of people said it was a football school. There’s a large contingent of basketball fans. No reason you can’t be both.”

Since arriving at Alabama, the Tide under Oats has progressively improved year-over-year, twice winning the regular season and tournament SEC Championships, four straight NCCA Tournament appearances, and this season’s Final Four appearance - the first in school history. “While it was great and I want to thank them and thank our players for getting us here, we’re not finished,” Oats said Saturday. “We’d like to get back here and win this whole thing. I think that’s what our goal’s going to be. We’re going to aim to get back here and win the final game.
