I called out Stanley Johnson on Question Time – Fiona Bruce was right to step in y_alibhai for ipaperviews

In a tweet, I clarified what had actually happened: “Please remember I pointed out Stanley Johnson’s wifebeating in response to Ken Clarke who chummily portrayed Johnson as a good chap.” And I asked: “Why are viewers criticising Fiona Bruce and not Clarke? Is it sexism?” It is. Absolutely is. Clarke sailed away into calmer seas. Boris was not chastised for debasing the memory of his mum by trying to arrange the knighthood for his dad who caused her so much pain.

I called Baroness Helena Kennedy to get her views on this latest BBC controversy. As ever she was impassioned and legally precise: “This is cancel culture at its worst. It’s a wholly unjustified slur on a woman who has long defended abused women. I have watched the broadcast. Fiona followed BBC procedure by laying the facts of a contested matter before the audience in as neutral a way as possible. She was reporting what is publicly known about the allegation. She was not expressing her view.

Interestingly for International Women’s Day, Women in Journalism , a networking and campaigning organisation, hosted a discussion based on WIJ commissioned research by the online safety expert Dr Rebecca Whittington on online attacks endured by young and older female journalists. Three quarters of respondents said they had been threatened online and in person and a third had considered quitting the industry. Many self-censor and avoid some subjects.
