Pascal Struijk speaks to LeedsLive on day one of Leeds United's pre-season training camp in Germany about the club captaincy, playing in a back three and team bonding

Captaincy has not been discussed at Leeds United for the new season yet, but Pascal Struijk would be honoured to succeed Liam Cooper . The Dutchman wore the armband when the skipper and Luke Ayling were missing last season and will be one of the strongest candidates for taking it permanently next month.

“We haven’t had the conversation yet, but if it's me I'll be really proud to wear the armband,” he told LeedsLive. “I've been there for a long time already. I've been enjoying my time. If that were something to happen then I would be really proud and grateful for something like that.” “Sometimes it's hard, just to not be there and help a little just by being there or helping from the sidelines sometimes feels so helpless. I was trying to do the most I can to gain fitness again.

Struijk has a young family back in the UK and while it is hard to leave his partner and child behind, he cannot refute the merits of camps like these, which see the players living in each other’s pockets for nine days around some behind-closed-doors friendlies. They’re especially important for new faces like Alex Cairns, Joe Rothwell and Jayden Bogle, he feels.

The Dutchman has already spoken at length about Rodon’s quality since he arrived last summer and laughed as he tried to stop himself waxing lyrical once again, with him now a permanent fixture.
