Premier Daniel Andrews has argued he would rather listen to an Indigenous person's views"every day and twice on Sundays" rather than former AFL player Sam Newman, who urged Australians to interrupt the Welcome to Country at public events.

Newman then doubled down on his calls during a radio interview on Thursday where he was asked by 3AW host Tony Jones if he was racist. Mr Andrews, who was holding a press conference on the state government's latest housing reform on Thursday, was asked about Newman's remarks. "When it comes to views of former footballers, I'd be more inclined to listen say uncle Michael Long on these sorts of issues than Sam Newman," he said.

Senator Lidia Thorpe on Thursday morning also took a swipe at Newman, saying the 77-year-old had to"educate himself" as"we are on stolen land"."We all are on stolen land, there has never been a treaty, and a Welcome to Country is a way to bring people along on an understanding of the country that you are all living on.
