It is an 8.5mile route which runs between Blackwell Mill and Bakewell and is open to walkers, cyclists, horse riders and wheelchair users
I must confess, I'm not the bravest when it comes to cycling. The close proximity of cars, the stress of navigating through traffic, and even the simple act of indicating with my right hand fills me with anxiety.
Nestled deep within the Peak District is the Monsal Trail, an 8.5-mile route that stretches between Blackwell Mill and Bakewell. It traces the path of a disused railway line and is accessible to walkers, cyclists, horse riders and wheelchair users, reports the Manchester Evening News. You're provided with a map that outlines the route, although being a straight line it's not difficult to follow, but it does highlight what to look out for along the way. Staff can assist you in adjusting your seat and there's also the option of getting a helmet if you'd prefer.
But perhaps the best part of the Monsal Trail are the tunnels. As a former railway line, the route passes through tunnels carved into the landscape and it feels really surreal cycling through them after speeding past the countryside.
