Young Lancs mum who fled abusive partner now goes without food in order to feed her son, 2

A young mum who fled domestic violence has spoken out about her struggles and revealed she often goes without food to save it for her son.

“I go to my mum’s on Sunday for a lunch, so I do get a decent meal then, but I have lost money by going to work, because they took £200 of Universal Credit off me when I started working, so I’m earning money from work but losing money in benefits, £200 a month.” “The council said we can offer you grants or point you in the direction of charities, but it’s not what we do. The woman at Progress said why don’t you try to sort it yourself rather than try to get it for free?

She said: “Diane at Fresh Food for Working Families said: "I’ve got someone to do your downstairs. " I was hoping someone could do it and then let me pay bit by bit or something, and I was sitting there wondering how much it was going to cost, and they said, we will do all of this for you and we don’t want anything for it, so your little child will be safe then.

Yet her message for whoever is the next Prime Minister is clear: “All they do is not look after the people – it doesn’t make sense. But thank God for Diane; it’s every month at the moment and I’m so grateful because I think otherwise I would have had to stay in a violent relationship.” Housing and homelessness charity Shelter advises that tenants in council and housing association homes are responsible for furnishing them, unless temporary or supported housing, and are expected to provide their own carpets, furniture, domestic appliances and to repair or replace them.
