Dunham Press Cider's apple festival is the perfect family activity this October half term
Autumn is a magical time of year with young kids. There’s the excitement of Halloween and Bonfire Night to look forward to, and the enchantment of Christmas just around the corner.
Dunham Pumpkin Patch in Altrincham had to cancel their popular event altogether this year, the crop was so poor. Fortunately they had a fallback plan and I think it’s even better - not to mention brilliant value at £5 per person. Children then got to take turns to wind the handle on the press as the pulp was squeezed and strained through hessian to make the juice. Normally it then goes into barrels and is pasteurised, or fermented with yeast to make cider, but we got to try ours straight away.
I’ve always preferred beer to cider, but Dunham’s are a world away from the mass-produced varieties found in most pubs. I enjoyed a half of their medium-sweet Red Eye on a picnic table overlooking the orchard; it felt extra special to be drinking it in view of the very trees it came from.
