Mother-of-three Kirsty Murray encourages Keir Starmer to look at positive effects of Scotland child payments

Parents on low incomes who live north of the border are able to claim an extra £26 a week for each child under the age of 16 through the Scottish Child Payment system.in 2021 to reduce child poverty. Charity leaders have pointed to evidence that it is helping cut food bank use in Scotland. The part-time charity worker and her husband Dougie, a part-time personal support worker, have a combined income of £25,000, and are in receipt of universal credit.

“We don’t have a big income. But the bills get paid. And the child payment means we can still go out for a meal or go to the cinema sometimes. Not every month – it’s an occasional treat.” Nanda Haris, a 41-year-old single parent in Edinburgh, also gets an extra £213.60 every four weeks for her nine-year-old son and seven-year-old daughter.Ms Haris added: “It helps with the bills, helps me with food and clothes for the children. Everything has become more expensive. Without the extra money it would be harder. It’s so stressful thinking about money all the time.”

Ms Haris has been taking part in Changing Realities, a coalition of families, researchers from York and Salford universities, and the Child Poverty Action Group , who are monitoring the impact of the cost-of-living crisis.by Strathclyde University’s Fraser of Allander Institute found that the Scottish Child Payment has slightly reduced food bank usage for families in Scotland with children under 16.

“It’s very welcome, but families are still under huge pressure. There’s no credible route to reducing child poverty without scrapping the two-child benefit cap.”
