I was stuffed but new plates kept arriving

Last week I decided to treat myself to what I believe is the best Mexican food in Liverpool. Tackling the chaos of a busy Royal Albert Docks on a sunny Saturday, I fought my way through hundreds of people and waited eagerly at the gates of an already-packed beer garden.

I've been to Madre a few times. The Mexican restaurant is perfect for a quick bite as you can grab a taco, or a margarita and be on your way again in no time. This visit, however, was for no reason other than the fact I didn't want to cook and I was already in the vicinity. Even as my guest and I were ushered to our seats, there wasn't anything specific on my mind that I wanted to eat - I just wanted Madre.

When they started coming they didn't stop. The constant flow of food was progressively more intimidating and the portions were massive. Photos don't do their size justice. Next up were twin baja fish tacos - tempura battered Atlantic pollock with salsa Mexicana, verde aioli and yellow mustard. These were absolutely delicious and I can't stress that enough. They were stuffed to the brim and looked as pleasing as they tasted. Before we could finish, a third dish was delivered.

The fourth dish was three hefty chunks of skewered pork belly smothered in Mexican cola barbecue sauce and crispy onions. This one plate alone would be enough for anyone wanting a quick bite. It was delicious nonetheless. A delightfully crispy coat with succulently tender meat underneath. I stole two pieces while my partner was left with one.
