But nothing prepared me for the story of Jean Purdy , effectively the world’s first embryologist and the third member of this brilliant squad quietly but determinedly changing the world, against all odds. The wise inclusion of Purdy’s personal health struggles acts almost as a memorial to all of those would-be mothers that never could, and to those women living at the wrong time.

But I am also living in a time where there is still no cure for and little understanding of either of endometriosis and adenomyosis – both of which I live with – all these years on from Purdy’s life. In fact, I would argue that our endometrioses treatment and care is almost just as bad as it was in the seventies when she was working.

This is why I am working with the University of Edinburgh on its Endo1000 project, which is in its fundraising stage. It is led by the quiet but determined Professor Andrew Horne, who, with a wonderful team, so badly wants to find out what causes endometriosis and how to effectively treat it with a fully personalised approach.
