It’s 10.30am on a grey November Saturday, and I’m watching a woman holding an industrial-size spray bottle. Filled with bleach or disinfectant, you might think.It’s filled with lemon juice, and she’s standing over a steaming hob spraying it in generous quantities onto a crepe – a crepe that has my name on it.
Stall holders have defended increases, pointing the finger of blame at another year of rent rises. Manchester Council have also gone on the defensive, blaming the hefty price tag that accompanies infrastructure and security for one of the UK's most popular Christmas events. Since I was going to be at the markets all day, I thought I may as well try and get breakfast there – and what better way to start the day than a crepe? It’s good enough for the French.
The latter half of the crepe was better: sweet and tangy. But I think next time I’ll spend an extra £1 for a filling that goes a little further. Waiting for your order at Porky Pig on a Saturday lunchtime is something like what I imagine the London Stock Exchange must once have been like: people jostling for position, clutching slips of paper and screaming numbers at each other.
It also bears mentioning that the wrap itself was huge and enormously filling – more than enough on its own for a main lunch or dinner, so much so that I don’t have it in me to try any more of the food there. Not even the giant slabs of Toblerone or cheese-stuffed coins could tempt me at this point.
