Our Everton jury have their say on another rollercoaster week at Goodison Park
Everton brought the curtain down on their Premier League with a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.
In the end, the result did not tell the story of the match; of course, Arsenal had the clearer opportunities, but Everton’s defence hung in there. Jordan Pickford was once again at his brilliant best. I don’t like to go on about VAR, but it’s clearly not working if the officials rule Gabriel Jesus’ handball as legal. Would this be the case if that was an Everton player stopping Arsenal from winning the league? We shall see this summer if the clubs have had enough of the technology.
How referee Michael Oliver chose to ignore a blatant handball by Gabriel Jesus, which led to Arsenal’s winning goal in the last minute of normal time, even after a VAR review, simply defied belief. It robbed Everton of a well-earned point last Sunday, which would have meant we ended the season on a six-match unbeaten streak.
It shows the standards that he continues to demand of his squad and contrasts strongly with the humiliating 5-1 defeat suffered on the final day of the season at Arsenal two seasons ago under Frank Lampard. James Tarkowski led by example again and left many wondering why he did not make the England Euros squad. If Gareth Southgate thinks Jarrell Quansah is a better defender, then the national team will have problems.
