A friend of a friend needs help caring for her parrot, left at home when its caretakers chose to remain in California, where they happened to be visiting as lockdown descended in March 2020. With this legitimate excuse to shake up her routine, our narrator is drawn to the charismatic and highly intelligent Eureka, a macaw.
People change all the time, and often when they do, their feelings toward the other people in their lives change significantly. That’s one reason people bond so strongly with their pets, who offer love that, unlike human love, is unconditional. Pets are like children who never grow up, who never become sullen teenagers or distant adults to be seen only on holidays.
