Harry Maguire had the Man United captaincy revoked 18 months ago but was a captain's choice to address the press with Ruben Amorim.

Bruno Fernandes flanked Ruben Amorim at his first Europa League press conference so Manchester United turned to their de facto second-in-command.

It helped Maguire that the first question was addressed to Amorim, who happily offered added context to his seismic declaration on Sunday that this is possibly the worst team in United's history. Amorim claimed he expressed those sentiments in the dressing room before he walked through the corridors of the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand to publicly air his frustration.

"As players, after the game we were really frustrated and disappointed," he conceded. "Coming off the back of a good away performance and beating Southampton, going into the game, we were confident and we felt we had the belief we could beat Brighton. But ultimately we didn’t perform well enough. Although he appears to have thrived without the weight of the armband, Maguire is reluctant to pin his improved form on a decision by Erik ten Hag that he described as "extremely disappointing" at the time.

"I look at previous players - I spoke about this before - the likes of Wayne Rooney and David Beckham had a large amount of scrutiny on them and they were world-class players. If it can happen to them, it can happen to anybody and it’s part and parcel of playing for this club.Maguire was an ideal sounding board for Joshua Zirkzee after he was goaded and booed by thousands of United fans at Old Trafford following his 33rd-minute substitution against Newcastle.
