The pill is safer now, since hormone levels were lowered due to health scares around possible links between pill use and breast cancer, strokes, heart attacks and blood clots, but it remains essentially the same as the drug invented in the 60s. Why has nothing more advanced emerged to take its place?
The experts who worried that publicising the side effects would scare women and put them off the pill were right. But it has not been talking about it that has caused scepticism about the pill: the data suggests that women are making up their own minds. According to, the uptake of oral contraceptives fell from 39 percent in 2020-21 to 27 percent in 2021-22.
New types of contraception are, apparently, in the pipeline: a once-a-month pill , a micro patch , non-hormonal contraception and, of course,In America, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation awarded a start-up $13m to look at making the pill safer and more accessible.
Ignoring a problem won’t make it go away. Ignoring women’s concerns won’t keep them on the pill. Pretending everything is alright won’t stop women experiencing side effects which are very, very wrong.
