Manchester City fan Mary Spiers gives the secrets to her happiness as reaches the incredible landmark
The First World War was still being fought when Mary Spiers was born in August 1918. And she was a teenager as the Second World War raged across the globe.
Mary, who has now moved into the Bowerfield House care home in Disley, near Stockport, this week received a card from King Charles and Queen Camilla. And she said she has been 'overwhelmed' by the response. "I'm flabbergasted," she said. "I'm mesmerised by it. I've heard they have even been sending them from abroad. I can't take it all in. It's like a dream" she said. "It's the day of days.
The family moved down to Southampton for several years, where she went to high school, before, aged 18, her dad brought the family back due to bombing in the port city during the war. He later set up a furniture business which had a shop near Alexandra Park In regards to remaining unmarried, she said: "No one would have me! But I'm here to tell the tale. I had two lovely sisters, and we were very close. We were what you call a close-knit family.
"Where I'm going to end up, I don't know. I read in the paper some time ago that someone abroad was 117. 117! I thought well I don't want to live to 117."
