is: “What happens when you take someone home after the club?” Then “do you have a single bed?” Everyone asks me this, but why don’t they ask the rest of my housemates those same questions? Because they have become dementia patientsEverybody assumes that dementia runs in my family, and it does, but that was certainly not what first drew me to understanding it.

Imagine: you get a shower once a week. People are drying you with a tiny towel that’s just too small. If you’re elderly, you can’t manage yourself and people have to do it for you, it’s forced helplessness. That’s one thing I’d say to people with loved ones in a nursing home is to try to make it feel like home in the small details. Towels, bed sheets, scents, furniture. At mealtimes here, sometimes my housemates are given a paper bib, which is dehumanising.
