Luke McGibney, from Kimberley, stars in Freedom at Midnight: The Indian Crown, playing the lead role of Lord Mountbatten
Luke McGibney had spent the past decade breaking up fights and trying his best to keep the general public, and himself, away from any drunken nuisance. Dubbed "the poshest doorman you'll meet", Luke had greater aspirations, having trained in places that produced world-class actors like Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Tom Hardy, to name a few.
"It couldn't be more of a different world suddenly going from that, to being the viceroy of India. Customers and staff were telling me I was the poshest doorman they'd ever met because I would try to avoid violence at all costs, I was really good at talking people down and I also used comedy to lighten things.
Luke, who was also the new product development director at Raleigh Bikes in the 1990s, said: "I was mixing with people who were my heroes and it was pretty cool. And then I landed the role in Freedom at Midnight. I went from starvation to having three buses come along at the same time, it was insane."
"He was quite different from the persona which you would expect, which is reasonably charming but still quite stiff. But he was renowned for being very charming, quite jokey and he could also have a temper. He was very orderly." "He was able to convince Sony 'this is my man'. Because I'm sure there could have been debates like 'but he's no one' but Nikkhil would tell them 'don't worry, he'll be someone'."
