She keeps several horses as pets and by 2013, she had set up a horse riding and trekking centre with an instructor and trail guide who also helped her to look after the farm. “As land was so cheap – only €1 per square metre – we had plenty of land for the venture,” she says.is lower than in the UK. While food prices in Portuguese shops are pretty similar to those in Britain, eating out is cheaper.
Although the price to fill a car with fuel is similar to that in the UK, Sarah thinks it is cheaper to own a car in Portugal. “They are incredibly kind, helpful and gentle with each other,” she says. “One small example is if you were to go into a hardware store and request a paint, the owner would be quick to suggest a cheaper option that does the same job. People trust each other. They would do anything for each other.”
