Of course, there’s the issue of possible Russian retaliation but it’s given short shrift in Ukraine – after more than two years of being invaded and regularly bombed, the only way things could get significantly worse would be a nuclear strike which, despite the Kremlin’s rhetoric, seems highly unlikely.“We Ukrainians adopted the formula ‘if he’ll nuke us – he’ll nuke us’ in the first summer of the war,” my friend Denis tells me.
While the honour of publicly announcing the successes in Kursk Oblast goes to Zelensky, credit for the operation is spread far wider – the general sentiment on the street and on social media is that this is a collective societal effort, in which everyone plays a part, not to mention the deep pride in the country’s armed forces.
