If you are accustomed to receiving a monosyllabic grunt when you ask about your child’s day, you are far from alone: getting children to open up and talk about their thoughts and feelings can be notoriously difficult.
“If your child shares a difficulty or concern it is natural to want to find out everything, but it might make them less inclined to share next time. My kids have usually had enough of a conversation at least 10 minutes before me! My daughter now tells me when she has had enough of talking about something, and I try to respect that.”“As parents we often want to help make things better, but similarly to adults, sometimes kids do not want actions or solutions.
