Flu, Covid-19, norovirus, and RSV are overwhelming hospitals across the UK, pushing health services to breaking point
Dr Luke Craddock has just finished a stretch working 70 hours in eight days, most of which were overnight.The junior doctor is on a four-month placement in A&E at Sherwood Forest Hospital in Nottingham as part of his second foundation year, after finishing medical school.
The latest government figures for flu cases reveal there was an average of 5,408 patients a day in hospital with flu last week. “In the UK you are taught there’s a gold standard of medical care practice”, he said. “You get taught one thing and then when put into work the reality is there is no gold standard – everything is bronze, if that.”
