Currently women are offered four vaccines during their pregnancy. Two are offered all year round, and two are seasonal
Here’s a fascinating fact that you might not know: pregnancy alters how the body handles infections such as flu. The immune system is naturally weakened to protect your unborn baby, and this can make you less able to fight off infections. It can also mean you’re more likely to pick up viruses through food poisoning and bacterial and viral infections like the common cold, flu and COVID-19.
Whooping cough vaccine Whooping cough infections, which can make babies in particular very unwell, increased in the early part of this year. Sadly, 11 babies have died from whooping cough since November 2023. Flu vaccine If you’re pregnant, you’re more likely to have complications from flu compared to women who aren’t pregnant. This includes serious problems like bronchitis and pneumonia.
COVID-19 vaccine If you get COVID-19 in pregnancy, you could become seriously unwell with it. That’s why the vaccine is recommended for pregnant women. The RSV vaccine is offered around or soon after 28 weeks of pregnancy. Chat to your midwife if you’re beyond this stage and haven’t been offered the RSV vaccine.
