“To be honest, even up until the actual day I was almost certain I’d missed it; it was only when speaking to other Paralympic athletes at the Palace who were saying ‘Oh yeah, we don’t know about this,’ and then my friend subsequently telling me it was an exclusive invite for Olympic athletes, that’s when we found out.”

Meanwhile, Paralympic bronze medallist Didi Okoh decided to head to Fortnum & Mason anyway. She was allowed in, but took to Instagram to share that “a speech was made during the event which made both Olympians and Paralympians uncomfortable”, about how us para-athletes “gate-crashed” the Olympic party.”.
“In advance we were told we could choose whether we wear tracksuits or formal wear, and personally I wanted to go to Buckingham Palace wearing a suit because it just felt like the right thing to do,” Shaw explained.
Shaw said he also felt the executive decision being taken was “unfair” as he is sponsored by Puma, but his GB tracksuit is Adidas-made.
