Mateo Joseph has spoken ahead of Leeds United's new season on a big year ahead, missing the Olympics, breaking through and competing for starts
Sliding doors moments can define footballers’ careers. Mateo Joseph did not let what could have been his missed opportunity spoil a breakthrough season at Leeds United. One week before last term started, Joseph’s frontline rivals were dropping like flies.
“I did a lot of improvement during the season, you could see as long as the games went through,” he said, sitting with the media at Thorp Arch. “Everyone wants to play every minute, it’s impossible, but it was a good season for me to be in a professional team already, in order to learn some things. “After the Chelsea game, Huddersfield , I didn’t have minutes and every player thinks a lot of things go into your mind, but you just trust the club,” he said. “They gave me the opportunity to be in the first team and trust the club and they told me I have to be patient.
Joseph says he had four days off to mourn Wembley, but restarted training after that, anxious to find any edge he could before the new season. When he isn’t tangling with the likes of Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk on the training field, Joseph is reading about how the best athletes in world sport got to where they are now.
“I'm not sure about that, but yes, I feel like I'm there at that level, so let's see,” he said. “Let's see if I can prove it on the pitch.” “We spoke after the game, the day after the game we spoke too, and we know what we need to do in order to be ready for this league and we are all ready to do it. We are up to it. We can't wait for the season to start.”
