Spectacular new images of the Moon’s surface have been released by India’s space agency after its latest mission entered lunar orbit at the weekend ClaireGilbodyD reports
The spacecraft blasted off on 14 July using the LVM3 launch rocket, which sent Chandrayaan-3 into Earth’s orbit from the southern state of Andhra Pradesh.
More than 1.4 million people watched the launch on ISRO’s YouTube channel, many offering congratulations and the patriotic slogan “Jai Hind” .the Chandrayaan-3 had “been successfully inserted into the lunar orbit” – the third time an Indian spacecraft has achieved this.“MOX, ISTRAC, this is Chandrayaan-3. I am feeling lunar gravity,” the post began, adding emojis of the Moon and a smiley face.
The spacecraft’s lander and rover are due to touch down on the surface on 23 August and if successful, it would make India the first country to carry out a “soft landing” near the lunarThe South Pole is of particular interest for space agencies and private companies because of the presence of water ice, which could support a future space station.
The mission comes after Chandrayaan-2’s lander-rover crashed while trying to touch down on the moon in 2019.It aims to “demonstrate safe and soft landing” on the lunar surface, “demonstrate Rover roving” and conduct scientific experiments over two weeksChandrayaan, meaning “moon vehicle” in Sanskrit, is India’s first major mission since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government announced policies to encourage investment in space launches and satellite businesses.
