EXCLUSIVE: In the UK, as many as one in five Brits have had an affair - and research suggests that the number of women cheating in relationships has risen by 40% since 1990
After doing her hair and perfecting her make-up, Nikki* was all set for an exciting afternoon. She left her family nest and took a breezy 20-minute journey to the local cafe and a swarm of butterflies tumbled around in her stomach.
"We'd WhatsApped all day, every day and when we met, we just knew. It felt really right and we didn't live far away from each other, so it was really convenient. It was everything I'd been looking for." "Affairs are fairly common, and research suggests that up to 20% of married people have engaged in infidelity at some point in their relationship. Arguably, this percentage may be far higher a lot of people start speaking to others online without ever taking it further is this an affair? Some might say it is," explains psychologist and relationship expert Mairead Molloy .
"My husband is much older than me, and he's of a generation that doesn't really talk about emotions. I've tried a few times to talk about how unhappy I am and lonely in the marriage but he thinks that because I've got a nice house, a nice car and a gym membership that's enough for the marriage. But I'm at that stage where I want more," she says. "HRT has given me a new lease of life and has made me want to have sex again.
Nikki has been on dates with a variety of men through the site, sharing her insights: "One guy sent me a long list of sexual things, most of which I hadn't heard of, but most people just feel lonely or stuck in a marriage. I saw one man who'd been married for 20 years but slept in a different room to his wife. It was really sad," she says.
Discussing the effects, Mairead notes, "Affairs can contribute towards a renewed appreciation for your partner, improved communication, personal growth and self-awareness, and new intimacy with your partner," But she warns, "However, having an affair can also seriously damage a relationship. The long-term effects often include trust issues, hurt feelings and even the end of a relationship.
