Costs can be prohibitive, and some are exploitative – but the seven I've tried have transformed my life
Costs can be prohibitive, and some are exploitative – but the seven I've tried have transformed my lifeAs I gazed at the valley and snow-capped mountains below, I felt exhilarated. I had just climbed a mountain with a group of women who were strangers just 48 hours before. I was so glad to have overcome my initial apprehension about leaving my three young children at home to go on my first retreat, in theretreat in 2018.
Retreats can also be a form of self-development and connection for self-employed women like me who don’t always have access to corporate training or in-house courses. I sometimes even prefer them to going away with friends, as I can be who I want, and as sociable as I want, without any expectations.Sometimes, it’s easier and more liberating to share personal things with people that you don’t know very well.
That’s not to say, however, that there isn’t also an exploitative element to some retreats. They can be a magnet for lonely, middle-class, midlife women.-type housewives, divorcees, empty nesters and so on. In other words, women with disposable income and a bit of time on their hands. Plenty of women who go on retreats do seem to fit that mould. It’s also, from my experience at least, often only white women who join.
Then there is the fact you need to take time off – from work and from family – a luxury that many can’t afford., detoxing, breathwork – and then charging a premium for people to go on a “retreat” when it’s just a weekend somewhere with a talk from a so-called expert.
