The teenager now represents Great Britain in wheelchair fencing
However, tragedy struck when the then 15-year-old fell 30ft after a branch on the tree snapped. Following the tragic accident on May 2, 2022, emergency services were immediately called and James received critical care from Critical Care Paramedics at North West Air Ambulance Charity .
It was confirmed the teenager had sustained multiple fractures to his spine, as well as an incomplete tear of his spinal cord. A challenging four-month recovery period followed, with James undergoing intensive treatment and rehabilitation. “I was 15 at the time of my accident and didn’t know that NWAA was a charity, since we found out, we’ve been trying to raise as much money as possible to support them.”
Senior Paramedic Team Leader Caroline, at NWAA Charity, said: “We undertook a detailed examination of James, and this helped us to identify what possible injuries he had and formulate a treatment plan. James was presenting with signs and symptoms of a spinal injury, we monitored him and his observations very closely and were ready to perform any interventions necessary to address any changes.
