I’ve kept quiet in meetings, though I disagreed or knew the person speaking was wrong. Society likes women who are agreeable and, in some cases, pushovers. It’s what has happened to me since I’ve recently made an effort, and promised to myself, to take up space. I’ve had raised eyebrows and confused expressions when I’ve asked men to move their bags off seats on public transport, so you can imagine what it was like being as self-assured as them on the streets.
