We should go back to the days where flying itself was an event too
Flying used to be classy. People used to wear their Sunday best to fly. Gents wore hats. Women wore dresses. Look at any pictures of early flights and you’ll see breezy airports, people in their best clothing, reading a newspaper while awaiting their flight.
Now take a snapshot at any major UK airport and what will you see? People wearing baggy tracksuit bottoms, hair unbrushed, scuffing along in “comfy” socks and sliders . There’s something about presenting yourself in a decent way that has an impact on behaviour – countless studies have found that dressing up makes us feel more confident and successful. And airline pilot Ken Schulte once told: “Well-dressed people never cause drama on a flight. You might not think pilots would notice all this, but every incident of bad behavior leads to a report to the flight deck. The troublemakers are the ones who look like they just rolled out of bed.
On my recent trip I lost count of how much tracksuit chic I came across. Men stroll along, unshaven, looking like they’ve just slept in a ditch. Women have messy hair, saggy sweatpants, no make up or too much make up and the ever ubiquitous holiday nails. You can still be comfortable and look like you’ve bothered. Nice linen outfits , cotton co-ords and so on are all comfy without forgoing style and self respect.
I may sound like a snob, but I am not. I’m all for flights being open to anyone. I come from a working class background where flights were a dream – I didn’t fly until I was 19 years old and even now don’t take it for granted that I can holiday abroad with my family.
