Donovan Mitchell is the leader in Cleveland and he knows that. He knows he has to play better. kelseyyrusso on how Mitchell is shouldering the blame for the Cavaliers’ Game 4 loss to New York:
“I think he’s putting too much on himself,” Garland said. “That’s what All-Stars do. Just trying to blame everything on himself, but it’s not on him. This is a group effort. This isbasketball. It’s not just on him. So anything he says that he puts on himself, don’t listen to him. I mean, everybody have nights like this. I think he got some really good looks. He was aggressive tonight, so we need that from him going forward. I mean, he’s been one of the leaders of this group this entire year.
Without Mitchell’s ability to put the Cavs on his back in terms of scoring, they struggled to produce. They shot 36-of-77 from the field and 6 of 23 from 3 as a team. They were held to under 100 points for the second-consecutive game, as well as in all three of their losses this series. “You got to put the ball in the basket,” Bickerstaff said. “We’ve got to do a better job of creating opportunities for each other, and when we get opportunities, we got to take advantage of them.”
Mitchell remembers coming to Madison Square Garden for a playoff game as a kid. He also remembers the noise and atmosphere that the “Mecca” of basketball brought. As a kid who grew up in Elmsford, N.Y., about 25 miles from the arena, stepping into the Garden for these two games was a dream. But despite that excitement, Mitchell and his Cavs won’t be coming home with any victories. Now they head back to Cleveland for Game 5 on Wednesday, a must-win to keep the series afloat.“I believe in myself; I believe in this group,” Mitchell said. “We believe in each other. If you give up 3-1, you’re not built for these moments. […] We had our faults as a group, but ultimately, I didn’t do what I was supposed to do. I’ll take that. I gotta just be better.
