One reporter has shared their less-than-stellar experience catching a ScotRail train to Edinburgh during the Fringe, and it admittedly doesn't sound overly pleasant.
Whether you live in the city or have journeyed through for an afternoon to see some shows, you will know that the August crowds in Edinburgh can be brutal. As bad as the streets can be, public transport is often even more rammed.
A woman perched on a foldable seat nearby remarked, "It's not exactly the best seat but I can't stand up for an hour". At that moment, the toilet door swung open, wafting a foul odour our way. Reflecting on a trip to Sri Lanka last year, even their rail system seemed superior to ScotRail's. Their trains might have been vintage models from the mid-20th century, but they were plentiful and ran with commendable regularity.
An initial announcement delivered the disheartening update of an "incident", necessitating a return to Linlithgow that was met with widespread dismay. However, just when the train had started shifting in what seemed a retreat, a subsequent announcement revealed that we were heading to Edinburgh after all — prompting a subdued cheer and a lift in spirits among the weary commuters.
Our return journey was better, though that isn't saying much. We managed to secure a seat, but many were still forced to stand.
