From the songs urging us to “have a cup of cheer” to food smothered in brandy and rum – I even spotted Brie & Bubbly crisps on Sunday – December is absolutely steeped in booze.
Over the years, when I’ve shared advice on how to cut back, I’ve heard the familiar chorus of “boring!” and “why should I give up just because you can’t handle it?” Well, the good news for youwho are still reading is: you don’t have to. I get it. Life is short, and if you can have a few eggnogs at Christmas without regret or injury, this article might not be for you. Go eat, drink, and be merry – you’ll probably be just fine.
Without a hangover, I could be more present for my wife and loved ones, which meant I was making theirbetter too. After all, it is the season of giving. I started to give myself reasons to stay sober rather than reasons to drink. Although, if you ask me, there’s no easier way to track your alcohol units than by having zero of them – and what’s more, it’s a fabulous, smug feeling to be able to answer “none at all, actually” when your GP asks you how many units you have a week.
However, if you’re newly sober, it’s important to be cautious about anything that might trigger cravings. I didn’t try non-alcoholic beer until I’d been sober for a year – and even then, it felt a little risky.
