Kevin De Bruyne showed his value to Manchester City in a captivating press conference where he covered his fitness, the team's form, and his future.
There was confusion among the Manchester City fanbase when Kevin De Bruyne was overlooked for the captain's role last summer. Kyle Walker has led the side since then and De Bruyne insisted he didn't need an armband to play a leadership role of his own.
"Kevin will be honest," said Pep Guardiola immediately before De Bruyne arrived. "He wants to finish here at his best. I don't think he will be here when he believes he doesn't feel he can be the Kevin that can produce and help the team like he has done in the last decade. This is the dilemma regarding De Bruyne's future. At his best there isn't even a question about keeping him at the Etihad past next summer. But he hasn't been at his best fitness-wise for a long time. And he isn't getting any younger.
Guardiola's contract offers some clarity in terms of what his own future at City would look like. He knows the boss inside out and Guardiola knows De Bruyne better than anyone. But he knows what is needed. There has already been a crisis talk from the captains this season so another isn't needed now. He explained: "I don’t think my role changes anyway. I have been here for seven to eight years, I was young when I started I am older now. Some people want to speak or want advice, some don’t. I don’t think this team needs team talks.
