Lynn Anderton connected with the main character in the modern Christmas classic
Most film lovers are familiar with that feeling of leaving a cinema filled with insight, emotion and inspiration.
The therapy works by giving a client a film to watch with the intention of seeing themselves reflected. They may relate to that character in the way that their experience is similar to their own. "Taking my siblings to a local cinema to give my mother a break and then using them in later life. When crisis loomed, I began to emulate characters to build my self-esteem and resilience to manage relationships better.
Lynn first became interested in movie therapy following the breakdown of her marriage in 2007. Finding herself in a crisis, she looked to films for emotional support as she 'needed to connect with something' she felt familiar with. With the film bringing her a sense of peace, she decided to help others by taking an online movie therapy course based in the US. "I’d always had a fascination with behaviours and personality," she said.
"I prescribe very specific films for certain types of people," she added. "The films go from a crisis, to progressing to what the characters learn, to taking action.
